Hiking > bryanlallen  > Nature > Mineral King to Kaweah Gap to Sawtooth Pass Loop 2007
June 2007 final "proof-of-concept" training hike, preparing for JMT. A very scenic loop with varied vistas.

bryanlallen > Creek descending from Monarch Lakes above to east.
bryanlallen > A large perennial spring which leaps from the south wall of Monarch Creek canyon. In heavy snow years the output of this spring is quite impressive.
bryanlallen > Descending the last few hundred vertical feet into Mineral King Valley, with Farewell Gap to south on the left.
bryanlallen > Back in the Sawtooth Pass/Timber Gap trailhead parking lot. Marmots have been allowed to become destructive pests here and have been known to chew on (to them) tasty hoses and wires. For some unfathomable reason, some people have decided that propping their hood up will lessen the likelihood of marmots getting into the engine compartment. When I walked up, I heard a scurrying sound from the van on the left; in short order TWO marmots came barreling out of the engine bay! Our Fit showed no evidence of having been investigated by rodents (I checked.)
bryanlallen > Marmot footprints on the bumper of the van next to our car. Since marmots like to perch in the sun on top of rocks during the day, it seems like propping your hood open is little more than an invitation to the rodents to "Come on in!"

Not only has the Park Service failed to address the problem here, they've even failed to let people know that propping your hood open is Dumb. Park Bears and Park Marmots have lost most all their fear of people and will eventually have to be culled (i.e., killed) for the long-term health of their species; the National Park Service is neglecting their duty to manage the human-animal interfaces, apparently preferring to let the animals become ingrained in their destructive habits rather than addressing the problems their management methods have created.
