Hiking > bryanlallen > Nature > JMT 2007
July 4-14 2007 from Yosemite to Mt. Whitney, non-stop, unresupplied. A wonderful trail!

bryanlallen > Meadow by Sunrise High Sierra Camp. Cathedral Peak is the multi-spired light-colored peak on the horizon toward the right, and Cathedral pass is the low area to its left.
bryanlallen > Meadow near Sunrise High Sierra Camp, and low un-named dome to east. The dinner bell for guests was ringing (clanging?) as I walked through here. Small pine trees in meadow are artifacts of overgrazing in the past, and should be removed to allow meadow to fully recover.
bryanlallen > Belding Ground Squirrel (Citellus beldingi) with mouthful of grass for food or bedding. One older common name of this species is "picket pin", as they often sit bolt-upright and from a distance look like a wooden peg that someone has driven into the meadow to tie a horse to. I believe that the practice of "picketing" livestock is no longer allowed; it sometimes resulted in round sandy blowouts where the horse or mule grazed everything within its reach right down to the dirt.
bryanlallen > A few of the buildings of Sunrise High Sierra Camp.
bryanlallen > The middle portion of Long Meadow, looking north, with JMT visible on right. Columbia Finger is the prominent peak. The trail departs the meadow and goes to the east of Columbia Finger. I was tired and dragging (note time in "photo info" seen when cursor is over photo) and looking for a campsite. Mosquitoes were moderate.
bryanlallen > Along the JMT through Long Meadow.
bryanlallen > First night's camp along verge of Long Meadow just north of where the JMT turns away to the east. Two bearcans worth of food (22+ pounds!), as I was doing the trail nonstop and unresupplied. Stove is wood-burning Sierra Zip, titanium model, and tent is Six Moon Designs Lunar Solo E, which uses my hiking stick for its pole.
bryanlallen > Back on trail next morning, heading east and north towards Cathedral Pass.
bryanlallen > Looking towards southern peaks of Yosemite National Park backcountry.
